Small business has always been the backbone of rural and regional communities. It’s a vital life line to the stability of small communities and takes a hit when even occur.
Right now the combination of a ‘redirection’ of our home-grown tourism to bushfire directed areas and the onset of COVID-19 and the measures of restriction it has brought with it have affected the local economy here on the Bellarine and Surf Coast quite considerably.
It is believed by local tourism organisations that with the loss of overseas travellers the past 2-3 months has seen tourism income drop by almost 70%. The ripple effect is large and is crippling many service providers, retailers and providores.Â
There is an opportunity now for all of us with our strict travel measures to embrace what is in our own backyards and support the business that make our communities thrive.

Scotchmans hill winery
drysdale, bellarine peninsula
Set amongst the incredibly peaceful countryside overlooking Port Phillip Bay and the Mornington Peninsula, it’s no surprise that wines from Scotchmans Hill are so delicious.
I’ve been buying their wines for a couple of years now (and drinking them fairly regularly too, of course!)
Whether it’s a gorgeous Pinot through to a bubbly or a Pinot Gris, their drops are perfect for a casual drink over dinner at home, right through to a real celebration for a birthday or at Christmas.
A firm favourite in my house is the ‘Swan Bay’ Pinot, which never goes in short supply here!
The whiskery | Bellarine distillery, drysdale, bellarine peninsula
Now this gem is something you won’t find in your supermarket liquor shop!
The Whiskery is the home of Bellarine Distillery, the brains behind the delectable gins ‘Teddy & The Fox’, ‘Rosey & The Rabbits’, ‘The Old Dodger’ and ‘Trooper & The Roo’.
I’ve tasted a lot of gins in the last couple of years and these are some of the most distinct and delicious in flavour, with ‘Teddy & The Fox’ picking up a silver medal at the Australian Gin Awards in 2019.
In this day and age, it’s hard not to know of a gin lover, whether in your family or amongst friends. This makes a superb gift, that’s if you can resist opening it before you wrap it up!
brown magpie wines
modewarre | surf coast hinterland
A viticulture diamond in the hinterland of the Surf Coast, Brown Magpie Wines might be a winery you haven’t heard much of before, but you will from here on in.
I only came across their wine in a restaurant in Barwon Heads last year, and it’s been on our table on Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve. Their ‘Single Vineyard’ Pinot Noir is a must as well as their Loretta Sparkling Blanc De Noir!
